The Closet

A lecture by Henry Abelove
Tuesday, September 16, 2014 12 PM
BCRW, 101 Barnard Hall

Wilbur Fisk Osborne Emeritus Professor of English at Wesleyan University, Henry Abelove asks and tries to answer this question: How, why, and in what specific circumstances did the term “the closet” first come into use among gay and lesbian Americans to connote a hidden life? This lecture is part of a larger book project on the intellectual and cultural dimensions of the
gay liberation movement in New York City by one of the preeminent voices in queer theory. Abelove is the co-editor of The Lesbian and Gay Studies Reader, which won the Lambda Literary Award, and is the author of The Evangelist of Desire and Deep Gossip. In addition to his many years at Wesleyan, he has taught at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown, New York University, and Trinity College.
