As for a single “turning point,” though, I have to point to Barnard. I acknowledge Barnard at the beginning of every one of my book talks, anticipating the question “What made you think you could write this book?”

Answer: Barnard! It was at Barnard that I learned how much I absolutely love to do research, and where I last had ample time to indulge this passion. But even more important, at Barnard I found friends and faculty who believed in me. They planted inside of me the seeds
